The battle between Apple and BlackBerry | Access 2 Knowledge

BlackBerry have just brought their first touch screen model to the smartphone market and for the first time have taken iPhone head on. Until this point, the QWERTY raised keyboard of the BlackBerry was associated with business; the responsive, bright touch screen associated with social life. Then the iPhone encroached on the business world, with 91% of companies in the Fortune 500 either deploying it or piloting the iPhone instead of BlackBerry. Now BlackBerry are fighting back with their BlackBerry Torch 9810.

It is interesting therefore that Apple have chosen to launch iPhone 4S deals on the 4th of October 2011, in place of the iPhone 5 as anticipated; but when you consider the specifications of the iPhone 4S in more detail maybe it is quite straight forward and with the iPhone 5 still on the table, Apple may be playing the long game.

Whilst the BlackBerry Torch 9810 has offered an upgraded operating system, so has the iPhone 4S and with it the same operating system as their iPad 2 it appears that Apple have already won this battle.

If touch screen is your thing; and this is where BlackBerry are really entering the market, then, well Apple are just far better at this too. The screen resolution of the iPhone 4S is superior to any phone on the market and has a higher pixel rate than the eye can see, and given that it has ridded itself of the niggles with responsiveness which the iPhone 4 was sometimes guilty of then, again the BlackBerry Torch is going to struggle to win over any of the market on this basis.

The iPhone touch screen is made of aluminosillicate glass, the same glass which is used in helicopter and high speed train and virtually impossible to scratch which makes it more durable than the BlackBerry Torch. Apple win with aluminosillicate glass. Fact.

Apple took ownership of Siri technology in 2010; so BlackBerry are not going to get a look in to this highly sophisticated voice activation personal assistant device. Siri is a massive innovation in a world which is massively innovative.

The BlackBerry Torch did have a slight edge on the iPhone 4’s ability to multi-task; however with the addition of the A5 processor to the iPhone 4S that competition has disappeared. With the addition of Siri and iCloud to the iPhone 4S, it has become the mother of all multi-taskers.

However, BlackBerry Torch deals does have one coup; for those that want the best of both worlds and still feel in touch with the businessman in them, the BlackBerry comes with a pull out QWERTY keyboard, so that you can still tap out your emails and let people know that you are doing business rather than arranging a trip to the pub, which you may well be.

The recent controversy surrounding the BlackBerry, at one point their messenger service the scourge of society and their recent connectivity problems won’t have done much for RIM’s current market position. BlackBerry need to bring out something pretty special to compete with the iPhone 4S and by that point Apple will have announced the iPhone 5. Watch this space; but I know who I am backing.
